SUMMARY:Make a Plan to Go Green!
DESCRIPTION:To meet Massachusetts goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030\, 2040 and 2050\, we need to replace our fossil-fuel appliances\, including heating/cooling systems\, with electric ones as they wear out.  When an appliance dies\, it is almost always at a time when we need to act immediately. A good plan ensures that we replace appliances before they die\, thus avoiding costly last-minute decisions\, and at worst\, installing another fossil-fuel model. \nEdith Buhs will walk us through the planning process\, identifying the most critical items to replace and when to do so\, and providing guidance on useful planning tools and sources of guidance for our personal situation. We’ll leave the session with a scratch plan and some action items.

SUMMARY:Plastics: The Mounting Threat to Public Health
DESCRIPTION:Microplastics pose an increasing threat to our health. They last forever and are everywhere – in the food we eat\, the water we drink\, the air we breathe and the products we use. Scientists have linked the particles to serious health problems\, including cancer\, heart disease\, asthma\, and disruption of the endocrine and reproductive systems.  \n  \nLearn with Dr. Philip Landrigan\, MD\, a pediatrician and epidemiologist and nationally recognized environmental health expert. He directs the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College and the Global Observatory on Planetary Health. Dr. Landrigan has collaborated with other scientists to study the health impacts of plastics throughout their life cycles. He will share the study’s results and offer recommendations for taking bold steps now to reduce plastic use and mitigate its health impacts.  \nRegister.  A recording of the event will be available on the League of Women Voters of Needham and Green Needham websites

SUMMARY:Dumping More Sewage into the Charles? Just Say No!
DESCRIPTION:The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) recently proposed a plan that would allow sewage to continue being dumped into the Charles River forever. During a meeting with its Board of Directors\, MWRA officials presented multiple options for addressing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in the Charles\, and recommended adopting the option leading to the least amount of sewage reduction. After public outcry\, the proposal was pulled from the MWRA’s Nov. 19th agenda. According to an MWRA spokesperson quoted in The Boston Globe\, “…it will be considered at a future board meeting after further information is gathered.” \nDuring this webinar\, Charles River Watershed Association Executive Director Emily Norton will explain what the proposed plan entails\, why the board should reject it\, and what you can do to influence the board’s vote. \nPhoto by Kirill Yermakov on Unsplash

SUMMARY:Offshore Wind Energy – Overcoming Federal Headwinds
DESCRIPTION:Offshore wind presents an opportunity to deliver renewable energy\, decarbonize industry\, stimulate economic growth\, and catalyze the revival of shoreline infrastructure. Offshore wind can be deployed at gigawatt-scale without the significant land use\, siting\, and viewshed concerns associated with onshore renewables. Furthermore\, offshore wind taps into strong and consistent ocean winds that allow electricity to be produced efficiently\, particularly during nighttime and wintertime when onshore renewables are less productive. \nHowever\, offshore wind is facing unprecedented impacts from Federal actions in 2025. \nLearn about the current status of the offshore wind industry in New England in this free webinar\, presented by Metrowest Climate Solutions. For more information\, and to register\, visit MetrowestClimateSolutions.org.

SUMMARY:Geothermal Energy – Clean\, Renewable\, Proven
DESCRIPTION:Geothermal networks can take advantage of heat stored deep in the earth to heat and cool buildings. \nBoston-based HEET.org has been a pioneer in accelerating the transition from heating by natural gas to heating by geothermal networks that link homes and businesses. In 2017\, HEET proposed that gas utilities – which have millions of miles of gas pipes laid under streets – replace those pipes with water-filled geothermal pipes. The warmed pipes would transfer their warmth to ground-source heat pumps designed to both heat and cool homes. HEET worked with Eversource to develop a pilot project. Last year\, Eversource launched the first geothermal network (located in Framingham\, MA) built by a gas utility that moved over 130 customers onto geothermal energy for all heating and cooling. It is believed to be the first project of its kind in the world. \nAngie Alberto Escobar\, HEET’s Gas-to-Geo Transition Director\, will provide an overview of geothermal technology and an update on the Framingham project. She will also discuss what’s next for this exciting energy source. \nAbout Our Speaker \nAngie Alberto Escobar is Director of Gas-to-Geo Transition at HEET\, leading efforts to shift from gas to networked geothermal systems with equity at the core. She supports municipalities in assessing geothermal potential\, coordinates technical partners\, and co-develops engagement strategies that prioritize community leadership and long-term resilience. Angie holds degrees from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Sustainable Energy Economics\, and Glendale College in Mathematics. She is committed to a just energy transition that prioritizes efficiency over profit.
